What is Ringette?

2020 marks the 55th Anniversary of Sudbury Ringette - The Oldest Association in the World!

Ringette is a game played on ice, on skates, predominantly by females and consists of rules to specifically encourage team play, fast action, passing and competition, all at the same time while discouraging rough play.

The very first ringette game took place in the Espanola arena some time in 1963 with a group of Espanola High School girls that where convinced to come out during their lunch break and experiment with the new game that Sam Jacks and Mirl “Red” McCarthy (founders of ringette) had created. The event marked the history of ringette all over the world as Red took notes in order to create the very first written list of rules.

The Sudbury Ringette Association is a community-based organization whose mandate is to develop the social and emotional maturity of our participants, by encouraging teamwork, competition and sportsmanship through participation in Ringette, while promoting fun, fitness and friendship in a safe play environment.

Given the numerous benefits of keeping our youth active, productive and positive, our Association hopes that with the continued assistance of our volunteers, parents and community support, Ringette will continue to grow within our region, and that more children and their families will come to know the sport.
